PJ started as a diesel mechanic at EMS Group in February 2017, having previously been a DIDO worker in a Hunter Valley coal mine for 10 years.
When he saw the job come up in EMS Group’s labour hire division he jumped at it.
EMS provides labour hire services to most of the mines in Central West NSW, which meant PJ could be closer to his family at Dubbo.
EMS Workshop Manager Pete Edwards was on the interview panel along with Labour Hire Manager Matt Martin. Pete said he envisaged PJ in the EMS Workshop and so he was presented with both opportunities.
PJ took the workshop-based role and he hasn’t looked back since.
“I’ve been real busy and it doesn’t look like it’s slowing down,” he said.
“There’s a good bunch of blokes here. That’s a bonus. It’s a really good team and everyone gets on.”
PJ said there was plenty of variety in the work, and no shortage of it either.
“It’s a privately-owned show, with a really well-equipped workshop,” he said.
After 10 years working FIFO in the Hunter, PJ really wanted to move back to Dubbo to be closer to family.
“The best thing is being home, having quality time with the family. It’s like a big family here at EMS too, and it’s only about 5 minutes from home,” he said.
PJ’s currently helping his kids build their houses, so he’s doing lots of landscaping on the weekend.
As if that wasn’t enough, he’s also joining the EMS Bootcamp! He’s never done it before, so he’s a bit apprehensive.
“But we’re all competitive so we’ll try and see how we go. I’ll be the one puffing!”, PJ said.
